Mastering the Business Mindset — How to Shift Your Perspective for Growth

Many of my clients will tell you they started their companies because they wanted to help people. Some knew a little about a business mindset — others not so much.
But they’re all successful today partly because they’ve been willing to do the work. They’ve learned what it takes to be knowledgeable business owners. That’s in addition to already being experts in their respective fields, which is no small feat.
Where are you in your business journey? Let’s revisit the idea of business mindset. As you read, take some time to reflect on your perspective for growth and uncover any beliefs that may be holding your back.
What Is a Business Mindset?
A business mindset is what you believe about the challenges and opportunities you face as a business owner. It’s one thing to be an expert in your industry. It’s quite another, isn’t it, to set up a business, keep it running successfully for years, and one day sell it for a profit?
Having a business mindset from the start is a key to effectively getting through that journey with all its ups and downs.
Professional service providers who do it well are growth oriented. They’re committed to looking ahead and planning, and willing to prioritize the needs of their companies — sometimes too much! If not visionaries by nature, many cultivate that strength as they grow into their ownership role. They believe wholeheartedly in their work, and they surround themselves with others who believe in it, too.
“Instead of thinking you’re incapable of accomplishing your goal, why not shift into a business mindset? Challenge your perceived limitations and choose to believe in your vision.”
– Tony Robbins
Key Challenges
Even when you’ve done the work of developing a strong mindset, you’ll still face the same challenges other professional service providers face: payroll, cash flow, the many hats that must be worn. You may also struggle when you’re trying to grow an effective team or feel isolated being at the helm.
Through the years, I’ve often heard talk about imposter syndrome — the feeling that one day you’ll wake up and the world will know you’ve been fooling everyone all along. Renowned success coach Darren Hardy says even the most successful company leaders wrestle with it. In addition to the everyday challenges of business ownership, this is a real fear.
Reframe Beliefs for a Strong Business Mindset

And it’s one worth exploring. If you’ve been to Total Business Breakthrough, you’ve heard me talk about limiting beliefs. When you’re thinking about growing your practice, moving into that bigger facility, stretching to meet the $1 million revenue mark, what’s holding you back?
Take some time to think about what you’re thinking about. What runs through your mind when you get ready to call the commercial real estate broker for help finding a new location or create the job description for your newest team member? Pay attention to those thoughts.
If they’re negative and limiting, stop and turn them around. Instead of, “I’ll never find the right person for this role,” try “The right person is waiting for this job, and I need to get the word out as soon as I can.” Or rather than, “This move might be a mistake I’ll regret,” choose, “This move increases our capacity for serving clients better than ever and gives our team more space for collaboration.”
Addressing your own limiting beliefs is one way to maintain an effective business mindset. Stay growth oriented and visionary, too. And don’t forget to be mindful of who’s surrounding you. Keep your circle filled with others who are business minded, and they’ll be some of your best cheerleaders.
